4 August 2009: Aviva

McDougal brings the following video to our attention:

Awright, bay? Best thing about it is that Paul Whitehouse has actually got the Janner accent down pretty well - most times non-locals will just do a random countryside accent for Plymuff, which often ends up sounding like Norfolk or at best Bristol. Some Argo fans are saying 'no, sounds more like Bristol/Gloucester to me', but Becky can be the judge of that. And the vernacular is correct too:

Green Army!

Anything wrong with it? Well, he's not droivin' a bleddy Nova, is 'ee now? Ow's ee spectin to get anywhere op the loine or even jus dowwn Asders to do ees lodderies if ee ain't godda Nova?

Update: Just found a little more info from the Herald about the advert. Seems Argyle's Mr Media Rick Cowdery had a lot to do with re-writing the initial script to ensure it was genuine Janner.

Further update: Blogger's spellchecker doesn't know how to spell vernacular. Thanks Becky. And no, I don't tweet. It reminds me too much of the episode of Scrubs where J.D. decides to take a dictaphone around with him to record his thoughts and the best he can come up with is 'I like toast'.

Talking of which, time to make some toast.

Damn, I always forget you're not on Facebook, so you won't have seen me post this link yesterday.

Definitely more Janner than Bristol/Gloucester (although Cheltenham's somewhat posher than both). Not surprised to hear there was local input: seemed to get all the right words and phrases in.

P.S. Vernacular.
P.P.S. Went to Swindon v Argyle for my birthday treat on Saturday - hilarious 2nd goal.

P.P.P.S. Given that you refuse to join Facebook, don't supose you're on Twitter, are you?

Blog updated appropriately.

Excellent news about beating Swindle Town. Funny thing is, some five years ago now (sheesh) Argyle were pushing for promotion and played Swindon at home - I was there! Pass-back to goalkeeper, free-kick awarded, Trigger spots it and immediately takes it, playing it off the keeper's legs and into the net. Almost as comical as the goal you saw - I've seen the photos on GoS and it seems pretty ridiculous!

I'm pretty sure I was at that one with you! The quickest bit of thinking Trigger has ever done. Ever. Classic.

As for the 2nd goal on Saturday, Summerfield hit a 25-yard scorcher, which rebounded off the crossbar, hit the goalie on the back of the head and went in. It was all the sweeter for actually shut the gobshite goalie up for 5 mins :-)

P.S. Well, if you base your life on what JD does, you deserve everything you get :-P

The amazing thing is the bit "Summerfield his a scorcher". Actually I have a lot of time for him, mainly because his dad was such a good player, but the fans seem really divided over him.
Here it is!

Excellent, thanks for the link! We were sitting more level with where he hit the shot from and a bit further back, but otherwise that's more or less the view we had of it.

Saw the ad on spotlight when we were in Devon last week. Wondered how long it would be before it featured on the blog. Proper job!!!!

Just read your exchange with Becky. Yeah you DO need to get on FB. You could host a special Argyle page.

I can't believe you're commenting on the Aviva advert already - I nearly wet my pants when I first saw it and have just managed to find it on You Tube to ping your way but someone got there first! It's a classic! Hope all well with you. Grace xx
